This is the source of numerous disputes and it is a difficult subject. Parties should, however, aim at defining places of delivery/redelivery as clearly as possible and check in advance whether the contractual agreement match the actual conditions. For example, delivery “on arrival pilot station” is a quite common provision. It causes no problems where the location of this point in relation to the particular port can be determined. There are, however, ports at which there is no physical pilot station but rather an area where pilots board ships, and other ports may have more than one approach (for instance, Antwerp) meaning that there may be more than one pilot station, not to mention ports at which pilotage is a multiple-stage operation consisting of non-compulsory pilotage, which may also create problems on the basis of redelivery “on dropping o...
